Random Friday; theaudience and their tune A Pessimist Is Never Disappointed, one of those Britpop hits (number 27 apparently!) that would probably be forgotten were it not for the fact that it featured a much younger Sophie Ellis-Bextor doing her best Sandie Shaw impression. Infact the whole thing sounds a lot like Sandie backed by The Smiths. Rather nice!

Yeah, that's a grand little track. They were a good band who never quite lived up to their potential. Shame!
I can remember meeting her Dad once. I was lucky enough to be working with John Peel at the time and we were filming in the Isle Of Wight and Mr Bextor came over and introduced himself by saying 'I work in television too, can I join you?'. After a bit he said casually, 'Oh John, by the way my daughter sings in a band called Theaudience'. John said 'that's the name without the space between the 'the' and 'audience' isn't it? Whoever thought of that needs their face smashed in!'. Mr Bextor.. said hurriedly 'it wasn't Sophie's idea'. But I think he thought it was.
I love the way you throw away the comment about working with John Peel early on as if it was the least important thing about that reply!
I met Sophie once or twice after theaudience split at various gigs friends were working at. She was really nice, very shy and quite sweet.
Oh and very tall....at least taller than me....
