Sounds For Sunday

Some soul today, and some real gems. I can't type and dance at the same time, so I'll let the music do the talking today. Happy Sunday!

Don Thomas - Come On Train

Ginger Thompson - Boy Watcher

The Impressions - We're Rolling On Pt1

The Dynells - Call On Me

Larry Williams and Johnny Watson - Too Late

Lou Pride - I'm Coming Home In The Morning

Good to see I'm not the only boy watcher in town, Ginger. Lovely selection.

One of my favourite tunes, northern or otherwise, ever! Always, always puts a smile on my face.

Cheers :)

The Lou Pride one is great, they're all good. Are they from a mixture of albums?

Ok *deep breath*, Don Thomas 'Come On Train' is from a compilation called 'This Is Northern Soul 2' which was a cheapy from Woolworths £5.99 section (!); The Impressions I got from a Curtis Mayfield/Impressions compilation, but it's originally from The Impressions album 'We're A Winner'; The Dynells track came from a fantastic series called 'After Hours', this one came from Volume 3. (The 'After Hours' series is one of my favourite soul series ever).

The Lou Pride one came as a bunch of mp3s from a friend - I'm not sure where it came from in the first place. It's a fantastic track though. It does appear to be available on a compilation from Goldmine "The Wigan Casino Story".

And Ginger Thompson is a vinyl rip from an old Kent compilation from the early 80s, 'On The Soul Side'..Kent 006. Unfortunately it's not available anywhere on CD. Which is weird, cos it's an absolutely amazing tune. It seems to be one that's disappearing into the ether, which would be a crime!

The Larry Williams track is available all over the shop...I got it from 'The Best Northern Soul All Nighter...Ever', a double CD that came out a few years ago, kind of a 'Now That's What I Call Northern Soul' sort of thing. But absolutely chocka with fantastic classic Northern tunes!

These are all new to me so thanks. My personal favourite after one listen is the Dynells song.

The Dynells' tune I only heard for the first time about a year ago, and it was love at first listen; I love the guitar and the brass; that clipped guitar...you can draw a neat little line between that and some of the Nile Rodgers stuff with Sister Sledge a decade later.

And I love that thing of getting out your favourite tunes and playing them to people...'you've got to hear this'...it's nice when you give something new to some one. Satisfaction. That's the word today. Cheers. :)

A fistful of winners, those are right on my funky side of the street - incredible bass on 'Call On Me'

One my top tracks for bass is 'Turning That Heartbeat Up' MVPs, check out the have a go hero showing how to lay down the low notes, amazing.

And my fave soul sides of all time.

Some good stuff there PM, Miss Ross is one of my favourite vocalists of the Motown lot, she's pretty underrated as a singer.

Joolz, welcome! I've only been here a couple of weeks so you haven't missed much! But feel free to stick around. :)

Love The Dynells and the Curtis especially, but I've always been a sucker for him. Was flicking those 'After Hours' CDs in a shop just the other day, so will have to invest.

Oh they're good; it's not that they feature the 'best' tunes ever or even the rarest, but the overall quality as a collection is just superb. You know sometimes you get a compilation and it's half really good and half filler? No filler! They've been a regular on my iPod ever since I got them.

Hey there, Simon! Thanks for the tips about my blog. I'm linking back to yours too. I also picked up a site meter.

I was out shopping today and picked up a copy of the first After Hours CD based on your comments above (£5 from Zaavii or whatever they call themselves these days). Haven't had a chance to listen to it all yet but no filler so far...
