Annie Get Your Gun - Squeeze

13 going on 14, teenage moodswings, darkness and light all at once, girls turning into aliens from another planet, black flight jacket, one speaker not working record player, vintage shirts, capital radio on a sunday, star wars on video, walkman batteries running down, broken nose, 1983 was nothing like 1982, adidas, sergio tacchini, stacey, saddest vocal ever.

Another occasional favourite: Listening to it now, it's the way Glen Tilbrook's voice breaks on certain lines that gets me and the 'don't shoot that singer' part of the chorus. I'm still not quite sure what the song is about; and that's a huge part of it for me, the emotion is enough to get me through it.

You're running one step to the side of lots of my favourite things - which is perfect in all sorts of ways, I guess.

Thanks for the inspiration by the way. Your random postings led me to make a list of songs that I've been thinking about writing about for a while. While I've been sunk into soulboy mode for the past few months I've kind of forgotten lots of other music. Always nice to rediscover...

Your post on Squeeze reminded me of how much I loved that compilation. Not a duff track on it.

An afternoon spent listening to Squeeze later: How good are those songs and the lyrics...wow. Glen Tilbrook is one of the most underrated singers ever (although Crowded House and Neil Finn certainly rate him don't they?).

But the thing I always forget is the presence of Costello in the later half of the 45 and Under years. How much vocal time does the guy get on Tempted and Black Coffee In Bed?!!?!?

I love his one solo line on 'black coffee in bed'.

Very irrelevantly, there's a Tilbrook Close just round the corner from me, and I can't look at the sing without saying outloud 'leading to Difford Drive' and the kids saying 'daddy you always say that, what are you talking about?'

I so *heart* Squeeze for their melodies and immense cleverness. Also for the fact that I do a mean version of Tempted at karaoke, even though nobody else cares.
